“The Goblin Queen”
Digital 2020 Blaise Rhein
It’s Finally Finished! To date this is the most involved piece I have ever done. There are over 24 major figures and 16 minor figures which brings us to a total of over 40 👀
I have always been inspired by Jim Henson's film "Labyrinth" The film revolves around 15-year-old Sarah's quest to reach the center of an enormous otherworldly maze to rescue her infant brother Toby, whom Sarah wished away to Jareth, the Goblin King.
NOW, on to the illustration! My idea for this piece was to take this story, written for a younger audience, and re imagine it for a more serious audience. Like how would Guillermo del Toro rewrite this as a film, or what about a Bible story? I decided this story needed more consequence. Here goes! The Goblin King offers Sarah the chance to become the Goblin Queen and have all of her desires fulfilled....if she will, but sacrifice her baby brother to him. Yikes! Well, she was greedy and selfish, so she did just that. The illustration captures the moment after the sacrifice and Sarah is about to receive her reward: The Goblin Crown (only its an ominous dark, goopy, thorny crown) Not what she imagined.
Shout out to all the fantastic models (siblings, parents, and myself 😜) who made this piece possible. .
